The Minister of Human Rights, Meshdal Mohammed Omar, held a virtual meeting on Sunday with the Head of the European Union Mission to Yemen, Ambassador Patrick Simonnet, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen communication, coordination, and cooperation on human rights issues.

At the outset, Ambassador Simonnet welcomed the Minister and congratulated him on assuming his position, reaffirming the European Union’s commitment to continued cooperation with the Ministry of Human Rights.

During the meeting, the Minister outlined the ministry’s key priorities at the current stage, which focus on strengthening monitoring and documentation mechanisms for human rights violations to support future accountability and provide accurate data for informed decision-making. He also emphasized efforts to protect vulnerable groups—particularly women, children, marginalized communities, and refugees—alongside advancing the ministry’s institutional development, including enhancing its capacity in information management and data systems.

The Minister further presented the ministry’s vision for expanding cooperation with international partners, particularly the European Union, highlighting several proposed initiatives. These include institutional capacity-building projects, the establishment of a modern national human rights database and electronic information management system, as well as programs aimed at protecting and empowering women in conflict areas and promoting human rights awareness across educational and institutional sectors.

The meeting also addressed issues related to detainees and forcibly disappeared persons, with the Minister stressing the importance of continuing national efforts to address this ملف, follow up on reported cases, uncover the truth, and mitigate the consequences of such violations in pursuit of justice for victims and their families.

For his part, Ambassador Simonnet reiterated the EU’s commitment to supporting human rights in Yemen, presenting key elements of the EU strategy for the period 2021–2027. This strategy prioritizes the protection of women and children in armed conflict, support for civil society, protection of human rights defenders, promotion of freedom of expression and independent media, and combating discrimination.

The EU delegation also provided a briefing on several EU-funded programs in Yemen, including initiatives supporting documentation of human rights violations, empowerment of women and youth, strengthening civil society organizations, and promoting independent media.

Both sides exchanged views on enhancing accountability mechanisms in the human rights sector, with the Minister emphasizing the importance of supporting existing national mechanisms, particularly the National Commission to Investigate Alleged Violations to Human Rights, as a key body responsible for monitoring and documenting violations.

The meeting was attended on behalf of the EU Mission by Political Advisor Claire Nanterre and Project Officer Amparo Sebastia.
