The Minister of Human Rights, Mashdal Mohammed Omar, met on Sunday with the Head of the Prisons Authority, Major General Saleh Abdulhabib, in the interim capital, Aden, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the protection of inmates’ rights and enhance conditions in correctional facilities.
The meeting addressed a number of key operational challenges facing correctional institutions, as well as ways to further develop and modernize them in line with national and international human rights standards. It also discussed mechanisms to strengthen coordination and cooperation between the Ministry of Human Rights and the Prisons Authority, thereby improving the detention environment and ensuring the humane treatment of inmates.
Minister Mashdal emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to supporting the Prisons Authority’s efforts and enhancing ongoing monitoring and evaluation of inmate conditions. He stressed the importance of adhering to legal and humanitarian standards in prison management and working to advance the development of correctional institutions in a manner that upholds human dignity and protects human rights.
For his part, Major General Abdulhabib outlined the main challenges affecting operational performance, as well as the requirements needed to develop infrastructure and enhance staff capacity and performance. He expressed his appreciation for the Ministry of Human Rights’ interest and its role in supporting and promoting the principles of justice and human rights within correctional institutions.
The meeting was attended by Emad Sinan, Director General of Complaints and Reports, and Amani Abdulqader, Director of the Correctional and Prisons Department.
