The Minister of Human Rights, Mashdal Mohammed Omar, met today, Thursday, with the Executive Director of the Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission (IPHRC) of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Dr. Hadi bin Ali Al-Yami, to discuss ways of strengthening cooperation and partnership between the Ministry and the Commission in areas related to the protection and promotion of human rights.
During the meeting, the Minister reviewed recent developments concerning the human rights situation in Yemen, highlighting the grave and systematic violations suffered by civilians in areas under the control of the Houthi terrorist militia, affecting various segments of society, including children, women, and the elderly.
The two sides also discussed prospects for future cooperation between the Ministry and the Commission, mechanisms for enhancing institutional communication and exchanging expertise, as well as a number of programs and projects that could be implemented in the fields of capacity building, institutional development, and support for efforts aimed at protecting and promoting human rights.
The meeting underscored the importance of aligning perspectives on human rights issues of mutual concern and establishing direct channels of communication between the Ministry and the Commission, in a manner that would contribute to strengthening coordination and advancing the partnership in the coming period.
For his part, Dr. Hadi Al-Yami expressed the Commission’s readiness to expand cooperation with the Ministry of Human Rights and to support priority programs and initiatives. He also noted the Commission’s aspiration to enhance its presence and cooperation with national human rights institutions and stakeholders in Yemen.
Both sides agreed to continue coordination and communication in the coming period as a step toward developing a framework for partnership between the Ministry and the Commission, including exploring the possibility of signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to regulate areas of joint cooperation, alongside preparations for an upcoming visit by a Commission delegation to Yemen.
