The Ministry of Human Rights of the Republic of Yemen welcomes the statement issued by the Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation at the conclusion of its 27th Regular Session, which included a clear condemnation of the grave and systematic violations committed by the terrorist Houthi militias backed by the Iranian regime against civilians, and affirmed the necessity of respecting the rules of international humanitarian law and international human rights law and ending impunity.
In view of the Ministry’s strong interest in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and its belief in the important role it plays in serving the causes of the Islamic Ummah and strengthening cooperation among Member States, the Ministry values the professional and human rights role carried out by the Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission as the Organization’s specialized human rights mechanism, as well as its efforts to promote respect for human rights and consolidate the principles of justice and the rule of law in the Islamic world.
The Ministry of Human Rights also values the deep understanding reflected in the statement of the scale of the humanitarian tragedy caused by the militias’ violations, and its explicit condemnation of unlawful killings, arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, torture, child recruitment, the targeting of civilians and civilian facilities, the laying of landmines, and other violations documented by the Ministry and relevant national bodies over the years of the coup.
The issuance of this statement followed the active participation of the Minister of Human Rights, Mashdal Mohammed Omar, in the proceedings of the 27th Regular Session of the Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission, including the comprehensive briefing he presented before the Commission, in addition to the meeting held with its members, during which he presented a documented overview of the latest developments in the human rights situation in Yemen and the grave violations committed by the terrorist Houthi militias.
The Ministry affirms that the conclusions contained in the Commission’s statement represent important support for national efforts aimed at documenting violations, providing redress to victims, and strengthening accountability. They also reflect growing consensus within regional organizations regarding the seriousness of the violations committed in Yemen and the collective responsibility they impose to protect civilians and support the legitimate state institutions in carrying out their duties.
The Ministry renews its call on the international community and international and regional organizations to build on the contents of the Commission’s statement and take more effective steps to pressure the terrorist Houthi militias to halt their violations, release all arbitrarily detained, abducted, and forcibly disappeared persons, ensure unhindered access to humanitarian assistance, and hold those responsible for violations accountable, in a manner that contributes to consolidating justice, protecting human rights, supporting efforts to restore state institutions, strengthening the rule of law, and achieving lasting peace in Yemen.
