His Excellency the Minister of Human Rights, Mr. Mashdal Mohammed Omar, gave a press interview to Noon Post on the occasion of the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, during which he discussed the Ministry’s efforts to follow up on cases of enforced disappearance in Yemen, mechanisms for monitoring, documentation, and verification of cases, and ongoing coordination with relevant national and international authorities.
His Excellency the Minister pointed out that the nature of the violations, the difficulty of accessing certain cases, and the reluctance of some families to report incidents for fear of threats and retaliation make it extremely difficult to establish a definitive total of cases, particularly those involving women. He affirmed that the Ministry is working to integrate information received from its offices in the governorates, monitors, and victims’ families with information available from relevant national authorities.
The Minister addressed the Houthi group’s responsibility for a significant proportion of cases of abduction, detention, and enforced disappearance, as well as government efforts to follow up on the fate of disappeared persons and detainees through national and international channels, including the United Nations track and the detainee exchange process, alongside submitting information on violations to the competent international mechanisms. He also affirmed that the protection of human rights is indivisible and that the Ministry follows up on cases of unlawful detention in government-controlled areas and works with the competent authorities to address them in accordance with the law. He stressed that determining the fate of disappeared persons, uncovering the truth, and holding those responsible for violations accountable remain constant objectives.
